New ARIS sonar combines higher resolution and smaller size

The MacArtney Group is pleased to announce the European launch at Oceanology 2010 of the new Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar, ARIS, manufactured by Sound Metrics Corporation.

The ARIS is a development from the successful DIDSON sonar range and boasts better resolution, improved electronic capabilities, higher operating frequencies, lighter weight, lower power consumption and lower maintenance.

Sharp image processing in real time

The MacArtney Group, approved agents and suppliers of the Sound Metrics Corporation’s DIDSON sonar systems, is pleased to announce the introduction of a new generation of sonar – the ARIS, or Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar.

The new ARIS system is designed to offer very close range, ultra high resolution real time sonar imaging. It uses higher operating frequencies and narrower beam spacing for improved imaging details at close ranges. Combined with higher frame rates and down range resolution at maximum range, the ARIS is a breakthrough in terms of imaging capabilities.

An optional Remote Auxiliary Lens (RAL) makes it possible to switch conveniently between 2D and 3D sonar imaging modes without recovering the sonar, making it ideal for ROV/AUV operation.

Smaller size for easier integration

The higher operating frequency allows for both higher sonar resolution and smaller physical size due to the reduced acoustic wavelength. The ARIS system is significantly smaller than the current DIDSON, making it easier to integrate onto smaller ROVs than previously possible. The ARIS also has a lower weight in air and an enhanced temperature range that allows for storage from -30°C to +70°C.

The new sonar can also represent economic advantages. The ARIS Sentinel models will draw less than 15W – half the nominal 30W required for the current DIDSON. The ARIS System also requires less maintenance as the sealed lens arrangement eliminates the need for a silt box and the internal focus drive mechanism avoids potential jamming issues. FPGA based internal logic provides a future upgrade path for increased capability.

The ARIS Sentinel line is rated for 300m depth deployments. Other ARIS versions are available.
