Illumination from the sea floor
For many thousands of people living near Mount Etna, observing activity could mean the difference between life and death. Tectonic activity can be an indicator of pressure or magma build up or impending sudden plate shift. Much is known about tectonic movement on the earth’s surface but with two thirds of the planet covered by water, knowing about tectonic movement under the waves will augment our understanding of earthquakes and volcanic activity
Flashes in the deep
Infrastructure from MacArtney helps scientists look deep into space Capturing glimpses of particles that can travel through anything is a real challenge. As above-ground telescopes cannot filter out enough/sufficient disturbances to be able to detect neutrinos, they needed to go deep. ANTARES, a collaboration of 30 European universities and research laboratories, designed an underwater telescope array for installation at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Toulon.
Protecting more than the sea floor
Revolutionary trawling system protects sea life, reduces costs and improves catch quality In potentially the biggest change in recent fishing history, a new trawling method stands to have a double benefit for fishermen, reducing fuel costs by half and improving catch quality. The new method that eliminates chain dragging on the seabed also protects the seafloor environment and reduces unwanted species catch.
Uncovering secrets from the past
Acoustic imaging reveals new detail of lost town Off the coast of the Dunwich in Suffolk lies half a medieval town long since abandoned to the encroaching sea. Despite many diver and sonar surveys, the extent and detail of the well-known site are still unknown as poor visibility frustrates its study. In June 2010, acoustic imaging technology was introduced to archaeological survey of the site, revealing hitherto unknown detail of the underwater remains.
Taking the mud out of offshore drilling
Increased focus on the sea floor Since the 1990’s, governments and action groups have been increasingly aware of the environmental effects of offshore oil drilling. Apart from the potential for leaks and spills, the actual drilling process can have substantial effects on the area surrounding the drilling site.
The "Underwater technology stories"
In our stories universe, we want to tell how our customers solve the challenges of the underwater industry and how we help. 30 years of underwater projects has given us a treasure trove of stories that illustrate our dedication to the underwater industry and commitment to those who take up the challenge of working beneath the waves in a countless number of ways.
