Subconn - Wet mateable electrical connectors

Underwater Connectors
The SubconnŽ wet mateable electrical connector has, over more than the last 25 years, become an industry standard in most marine related markets.

In 1978 the MacArtney Underwater Technology Group made an exclusive agreement with the US manufacturer, Loup Valley Machining an Manufacturing, to market and sell the SubconnŽ connectors on the world wide market.

The connectors, all based on a simple but rugged contact design, are accepted as a cost effective solution by the offshore, military, geophysical, nuclear and ocean science markets. Hundreds of thousands of the genuine SubconnŽ connectors are in service throughout the world.

Subconn Connectors
In 1978 LVMM in Burwell, Nebraska and MacArtney A/S in Denmark entered in to a unique production and marketing agreement which has survived the test of time. Today the Subconn underwater plugable electrical connector is an industry standard accepted worldwide as a reliable, affordable and available product. In early 1999, Subconn Inc. was established, as a joint venture, to serve the market in the Americas directly with the headquarters at the new manufacturing plant and a marketing organization based in Boston MA. The products are supported internationally by the MacArtney Group.

Standard Circular Connectors
The Standard Circular connector series formed the basis for the development and technology of the SubconnŽ products available today. First introduced in 1978, and still in great demand, the connectors were quickly recognized as a cost effective and rugged solution by the underwater and harsh environment markets. The Micro Series was introduced a number of years ago to meet the growing demand for a more compact connector to match the decrease in size of underwater electronic packages - cameras, sensors etc. The latest introduction is the Micro stainless steel right angle connector series which is documented in this section of the catalogue.

The connectors are available in 4 shell sizes with up to 16 contacts rated for 300 to 600 V at 5 to 15 Amp depending on the contact configuration. The standard products include in-line and bulkhead connectors with pressure proof dummy connectors. Standard connectors are manufactured from high grade neoprene with Naval Brass bulkhead bodies. Most in-line cables are water resistant SOOW flexible cables. The bulkhead connectors come with numbered Teflon leads. The locking sleeves are manufactured from injection molded Delrin with stainless steel retaining snap rings. The in-line connectors and special locking sleeves mate with the SubconnŽ Metal Shell Series. The Standard Circular 2-12 pin connectors are available as field installable overmould in-line connectors.

Low Profile Connectors
The Low Profile Series, as the name implies, is designed to fit on underwater flanges, instruments or sensors where height is restricted or a "neater" solution is required. The connectors use the same contact sizes as the Standard and Micro Circular Series.

The Low Profile and Micro Low Profile Series are available with 2 to 9 contacts rated 300 to 600 V at 5 to 15 Amp depending on the contact configuration. The standard products include in-line, bulkhead, pressure proof dummy connectors and a neoprene retaining strap. Most in-line cables are water resistant SOOW flexible cables. The bulkhead connectors come with numbered Teflon leads. Standard connectors are manufactured from high grade neoprene with Naval Brass bulkhead bodies.

Metal Shell Connectors
The SubconnŽ Metal Shell (MS) Series was introduced as an alternative to the Standard Circular and Micro Series bulkhead connectors where a more rugged and protected connector is required to mate with the standard in-line connectors. The new Micro stainless steel right angle connector series is documented under the Standard Circular and Micro Series section of this catalogue.

The Metal Shell SubconnŽ Series in stainless steel is available in three shell sizes compatible with industry standards. Flange and bulkhead male and female versions are standard. Contact configurations range from 2 to 10 contacts rated 300 to 600 V at 5 to 15 Amp. The connectors are designed to mate with the compatible in-line and dummy connectors. The connectors have an integrated locking ring thread on the body and a special Delrin locking sleeves must be used on all but the smallest shell size. Pigtail leads are number tagged Teflon wires.

Power Series of Subconn Connectors
The Power Series of SubconnŽ connectors was introduced to meet the growing demand for increased power requirements in underwater systems. There are currently 4 standard connectors in the series with a number of "special" connectors which are listed under the Specials section of the catalogue.

The series comprises a single contact welding connector, two battery charging connectors and a high power 4 contact connector. All the connectors are based on the proven SubconnŽ contact design. The welding connectors are designed for use with a selection of cable sizes and can be operated at up to 3 KV at 250 Amp. The 2 and 3 contact battery connectors are suitable for charging up to 25 Amp and are based on the Standard Circular series. The 4 contact power connector is suitable for 600 V at 50 Amp and is supplied in the standard in-line and bulkhead configurations.

Special Connectors
Over the last 17 years a large number of "special" connector designs for specific applications have been produced. All use the proven unique SubconnŽ contact design and, for the most part, are rated for deep water applications.

The connectors range from a single contact to advanced metal shell connectors for geophysical transition zone applications. Unique products have been delivered for direct circuit board mounting, mass produced underwater flash units, hermaphroditic connectors and low profile proximity switches.

Penetrators
The standard penetrator series is based on industry standard flange and bulkhead mount stainless steel bodies. There are four shell sizes, allowing an extensive combination of products. Both in-line and right angle designs are available in polyurethane and neoprene.

Designs are not limited to the standard bodies and many "specials" have been delivered. Combinations of power, signal and fibre optics are available in a single unit.
